Interview with 2019 Think2Be Youth Innovation Excellence Award - Murrumba State Secondary College

INTERVIEW TRANSCRIPT

Presenter: Congratulations Tiana, you must be so proud of your school

Student: yeah very much so and very glad even for just the publicity that it gets, cause it’s obviously a really big issue, especially with all of the fires that we’ve seen recently and it’s just great for people to know about it.

Presenter: Can you sum up what your innovation is

Student: Basically it’s an electronic device that can monitor firefighters to be able to tell when they are over exerted and pull them out from dangerous conditions. Before, they reach points of physical overexertion.

Presenter: wow, that’s impressive and Tiana what was the most enjoyable part of working on this project?

Student: Probably talking to the firefighters themselves. Actually, on my 15th birthday I actually got to go to Tugun Fire Station and talk to some of the firefighters. Actually getting to talk to them, hear what they thought and hear that they, the initially idea of IntelVest was to monitor the fires the smoke cause that’s what you assume would be the biggest issue for them. But it’s not, them actually telling us that it wasn’t the fires that killed them, it wasn’t the smoke, it was actually physical overexertion, it was really, I’m not sure what the right word for it is actually. It was really interesting, it was really good to talk to them.

Presenter: fantastic and well done. So who else was a part of this project? How many fellow school students?

Student: I was the only person who really worked on it, I had a lot of support from, especially my business teacher Mr Boardman who really supported me through the lot of it, along with my parents and my family as well, it was really really good

Presenter: Well done Tiana, congratulations
